After configuring this blog, I initially ignored the Aksimet plugin thinking I wouldn’t be getting any spam yet since I’ve hardly linked up my blog nor posted many articles to merit the attention of the spam bots. WRONG!

Akismet is a Wordpress plugin that automatically checks posted comments to check if they look like spam or not. After about twenty spam comments in a matter of a few days, I’ve finally decided it’s worth the bother to get a Wordpress API key and activate it. Besides, we can only expect the number of spam to rise.

Curious as to how much despamming Akismet has done in the world wide web so far, I checked out their page and found these interesting figures:

• Spams caught so far: 6,981,723,345
• Spam caught today: 4,955,142 (the day ain’t over yet)
• Percentage of comments that are spam: 88%

Whew! That’s some load off our backs. Pretty impressive, huh? Thanks Akismet!
