Asus EEE PC 1000H - Negative impressions
Sep 25th, 2008 by Rex

It’s been a little more than a week since I’ve bought my Asus EEE PC 1000H. Before the new-laptop smell totally fades away, I’m going to give my first 7-day impressions of this notebook. Allow me to focus on the problems because there are lots of pros out there already. Here they are in descending amount of bother they caused.
- It’s heavy. Okay, it’s not as heavy as most notebooks but for its size, it is dense. I’ve used a 12-inch laptop before that’s noticeably lighter than this. This comes as a big disappointment since I intend to bring it almost everywhere I go and the weight most certainly matters.
- The right shift key is misplaced. I use the right shift key most of the time so I need to exert effort to either start using the left shift key more or get used to the placement of the right shift key.
- The touchpad buttons are hard to press. It took some time before I got used to this. It takes an above-average amount of effort to press the right and left buttons.
- The multi-touch response is wanting. Multi-touch features don’t work fully in all programs after all and two-finger scrolling is jerky in some programs such as Google Chrome and Firefox.
- The glossy finish is indeed a fingerprint magnet. It’s not so much of a functionality issue but the very visible fingerprints do bother me when I see them.
- The laptop case is a dust magnet. The felt texture of the bag very easily gathers dust and the black color shows them off very well.
Additionally, I also experience hang-ups but I suppose it’s more of a software and usage issue than a problem with the hardware. That’s about all the problems I had so far. Now let’s see how long this machine will last.
P.S. Don’t get me wrong. If I were given a choice now, I would still buy the very same Asus EEE PC 1000H.
Hi Rex,
I have tried messing with 1000H for a couple hours and I also found the touchpad buttons are quite hard to press like what you said. Although, the list you have were minor problems and I am sure we’ll get used to it eventually. I’m good with the overall package and the price.
