Governor’s Poster Features Ripped-off Photo

Another case of photos being ripped off the internet. I’m posting it here because the photo involved is mine. The culprit? Most likely someone from the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
I and some online friends ventured into the Iloilo Capitol one day to take pictures of the sleek building and the panoramic views from its balconies. I’ve done it before so the views were already familiar to me. However, one familiar sight bothered me. It was the sight of the Iloilo Governor’s poster on the lobby wall.

Governor Neil Tupas' poster in the Capitol
There was that state of déjà vu. I felt like I have seen the image in the background before. I felt that it was mine. But I wasn’t sure since it’s been about two years since I took a photo like that. Somebody else could have just taken a similar angle, who knows?
I brushed the thought aside, but while my friends were still taking photos at the lobby, I kept going back to the poster. It’s getting disturbing. I have to establish whether it is indeed mine or not.
Back at the dorm where I had my desktop PC, I rummaged through the hundreds of folders that attempted to organize the tens of thousands of photos I took over the years. Then I found it.

My photo that came to mind the moment I saw the poster
I took this photo from the Promenade at Day’s Hotel on the top floor of Iloilo City’s Atrium Mall. I was with my mother and she treated me to a glass of mango juice just so we could sit there beside the window and take a good picture of the capitol with the afternoon sun highlighting it’s facade. Yes, I remember that quite clearly. I was a little bothered because the mango juice was expensive at P40.

I took many photos to take advantage of the vantage point
So is the background photo of the Governor’s poster mine? Obviously someone edited the photo to fit the portrait orientation of the poster. I did some adjustments to simulate the editing including brightness and contrast adjustments. Now, let’s put them side-by-side.

What do you think?

Hi Vince! Thanks for dropping by. Yep, I don’t know why they keep doing this as if they don’t know anything about copyright. Have you read about the recent complaints on the Iloilo Province’s website? Tsk tsk..

Rex, hi! I felt sorry for you, buddy and to all photographers from SSC who painstakingly take pics and got robbed off by these “big suckers” media (sorry for the language there) and pretend they wont get caught! Or if they do get caught, they just shrug their shoulders and pretend as if nothing happened! That’s because, the law is lax about such criminal act, that it lacks consequence(s). Only when they (the government) implement the copyright law seriouly which should entail steep fines and/or punishments, then people will think twice before committing the act. This seem to be a chronic problem in the media realm due to non-imposition of the copyright law or an oversight between public domain from copyright-protected materials. And this act is easily committed over the internet.
I trully empathize with you guys and sooner or later (I hope not though) that I will encounter the same predicament as you do now as I launch my blogsite, ilonggoLIVINGinCanada.com.

Yup! In fact I mentioned it to Marcos that the photo on the poster looks very familiar.

Yup, I saw that. I was really amused that you actually took the time to make that one. Haha! Thanks for the laughs!
