Review: Globe Tattoo Wireless Broadband Prepaid Kit

Wednesday Mar 4, 2009

just got myself the Globe “Tattoo” wireless prepaid broadband kit. I finally convinced myself to shed out P1,895 after I realized I will save myself much trouble by just buying it. Smart only has GPRS signal itan my area so I need to give up on buying the Smart Bro Plug It.

The Globe Tatoo prepaid kit

The Globe Tatoo prepaid kit

The kit comes with the Huawei HSDPA USB stick, a Globe SIM card, a USB cord (if you need to hang the stick outside your window?), and a generic manual for the USB stick.

The USB stick is a little large but there’s a slot for a micro-SD card so your stick can double as a storage device. There’s also a socket for an antenna but I don’t think I will bother with that. I just have one complaint about the stick.

The “Tatoo” design on the USB stick is CHEAP and a far cry from what they show in their ads. It seems to be the ordinary Globe Visibility unit with a cheap “Tatoo” sticker on it. The sticker is so cheap I could make a better one myself. The design appears to be printed by an inkjet and is visibly pixilated. The sticker itself might peel off in a few weeks.

Cheap, pixilated sticker!

Cheap, pixilated sticker!

Seems like the rebranding from Visibility to “Tatoo” was done in such haste Globe resorted to stickers for their unsold units! The design on the USB stick is the least of my concerns but I feel betrayed by their marketing. Perhaps, after Globe sells all their “stickered” units, they will ask Huawei to produce USB sticks with the “Tatoo” design on the plastic body itself. They should!

The USB stick is so different from what Globe makes it appear on their ads

On the other hand, I am very happy (and a little surprised) to know that Globe has an HSDPA signal in my house. I would say our location is a bit like the outskirts of Iloilo City. At certain times of day I could get a sustained speed of about 1Mbps although the average speed is supposed to be between 400-700 Kbps. During peak hours however, the speed crawls at about 4 kbps with frequent time-outs.

For the moment, I’ll keep testing.

Complaints (update)

  • Images displayed on web pages are visibly more compressed compared to accessing the same through DSL. Loss of quality is significant. Perhaps a strategy to save on bandwidth? (update: found a fix!)
  • You need to insert the SIM card to a cellphone to load prepaid cards. I don’t have a Globe or openline phone! I called customer service and they told me the only way is to insert the SIM on a phone and dial 223.

Note: You might want to read my review of Smart Bro Broadband Plugit.

Hi! I also brought a broadband tattoo.. but i got disappointed on the signal in our place.. which is in the list of hsdpa area.. Do you know where to buy external antenna of it?

Reply

Rex Reply:

No, sorry. Try moving nearer the window or make use of the USB extension cord to get a better signal.

Apparently, you can try building a cantenna according to this post: http://www.wirelessforums.org/alt-internet-wireless/re-cantenna-mobile-internet-38148.html

They’re talking about increasing reception for 3G/HSDPA.

I’m thinking of buying a Globe Broadband tattoo as well. How are the tests going?

Good review here. Ditto on the images on the web pages, but it’s strange since when I connect to the wi-fi at our other house, the image quality remains the same.

Regarding the sticker, the black one is pretty sophisticated. I have my own review here (http://lezette.wordpress.com/2009/03/12/globe-tattoo-on-eee-pc-701-4g/) and you can see in the photos that the USB stick with the black finish and silver brand label looks nice. It’s a good thing I didn’t opt for the more colorful ones. :)

Reply

Rex Reply:

So your black USB stick doesn’t have some cheap sticker on it? Perhaps they’ve already sold out all their old stock of white units hastily rebranded with some cheap sticker. Good for you then!

Regarding the image quality, it might help if you try clearing your cache.

HSDPA na! 3.6 Mpbs, after two days of intensive research yun lang pala solution!!! Try nyo, nag work sa kin!

yo! nice to see lot of good comments ;p

i agree with the cheap stickers :’(
The black version is always out of stock maybe because of its look. It was released the same time with the colored ones.

To Darryl:
Try changing your connection to WCDMA only instead of WCDMA preferred (In case this might be the problem)

Question:
I have a visibility (the old tattoo), It has a limitation that it only works on the USB slot where you installed the software. Is it the same for Tattoo?

I have a problem installing the software for Globe Tattoo. While I am installing the software, the USB itself is automatically remove from my system. I have verified this by checking ‘My Computer’, the Globe Tattoo was not there anymore. I don’t know why is this happening.

Does anyone here know why? Thanks!

Rex Reply:

I didn’t encountered this problem. Maybe your USB port is loose? Kindly check.

Kalel Reply:

I tried inserting other USB ang it worked fine.

Rex Reply:

You’re still having problems with it? I believe the unit has 1 year warranty. You might want to bring your laptop to the Globe centers. They’re quite helpful. Have it replaced if necessary.

Kalel:

I’ve already installed it properly. Why do I get a HSDPA signal and very strong signal but the connection is horribly slow? Is there anything else I need to configure? Thanks!

Rex Reply:

It happens to me too. Most likely it’s because a lot of people in your vicinity are using the network. However, when I use it late at night or early in the morning I can get good speeds of 1Mbps up.

So mas mabilis sa postpaid? I hope I could borrow a postpaid unit so I could compare.

It’s the nature of the technology that we cannot expect an excellent connection everywhere. There are areas na mabilis, and areas na sobrang bagal; that’s normal for mobile internet. Well, maybe Globe should have at least informed you about that.

I have observed the USB stick na umiilaw siya, then kapag kulay sky blue or cyan ung ilaw, nakakaconnect ako, tapos biglang dark blue, nadidisconnect!!

Forver….. 4G….. Forver Beatiful… TSkkkkkk tsk…

Sa Globe…. Ayusin niyo serbisyo niyo….. Damihan niyo ng cell sites….. Taasan niyo maximum mbps…. para matuwa consumers niyo…..

as an advantage, I used to experiment with my Globe Tatoo Mobile Broadband for several days…
and the best things I discovered were
*internet surfing without paying or loading and without registering on prepaid or postpaid plan…

In addition to that, my Globe Tattoo operates at the speed of
3.6 Mbps rather than 2Mbps.

Finally,
I can prove that intelligence is much better than money…

Believe it or not, it is the truth…

operating at full speed eh…

So I struggle and climb mountain ranges to debug and fix things that needs to be fixed. Right?

And after few days of enjoying it…I encountered the notorious Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). Wherein I try to recover the system in different strategies but its too late…
But the good thing was I remembered that I partitioned my drive into two… Salamat nasa Drive D: ung installers and documents ko…

I edited your comment to display the link. I don’t think you can embed images in your comments.

I think the 3.6Mbps you see in your network properties is the standard even without changing anything after installation. That’s probably the capacity of the modem, but not the speed of the actual connection.

As for the ‘connecting strategy’, tahimik na lang tayo. :D

Reply

April 20th, 2009 | 11:03 am

Yah I absolutely know that the 3.6 Mbps is not the actual speed…
rather it is the link speed that the modem can handle…

Take note for all of us…
1. Internet speed varies in 3 different section based on my experience…
* Browsing speed
* Downloading speed
* Uploading speed

2. By the way. Let’s don’t focus on the speed matter. Let’s focus on the quality it can drive…Right Qua Rex???

Try and tested softwares of mine…

Guyz I would like to recommend to all of you the
Mozilla Firefox 3.0.8
and
Opera 9.64
These two can beat Internet Explorer 8. Trust me…

for the download manager… use Orbit Downloader….
assuming that the
Average speed is = 50kb/s
Orbit Downloader speed is = 100kb/s – 600kb/s

for the PDF reader, download and use the Foxit reader rather that Adobe Reader.
Lightweight but very powerful…kahit sa Pentium 1 gagana yan.
Unlike Adobe Reader kahit naka Dual Core ka na…Naghahang pa rin…Atsaka Adobe Reader is a disk space consuming software (700 MB ata) unlike Foxit Reader (5 MB, portable pa!!!).

Want more???

Keep posting and replying….

Ayan huh…Baka magtampo pa ung iba dyan dahil hindi tinuruan about dun sa Globe Tattoo Mobile Internet Broadband…

Qua ReX, Let’s keep silent and timid…hehehe…

weee….

Reply

Carcasona Systems Reply:

I experimented on it already.
Mas mabilis pa rin ung default settings…
Tapos maclu-clutered pa ung connection settings ng device (e.g. modem).

Pero kung lilipat ka sa wired internet such as PLDT DSL…

It is very useful kasi continuos ung data transfer unlike on wireless services…Paputol putol…

TIPS!!!!

For download speed booster and manager, use Orbit Downloader… Try and tested ko na to at ni qua rex…

Para bumilis naman ung browsing speed, register on http://www.OpenDNS.com because they have a larger caches of websites than any other DNS servers.

KEN DLA 2RE:

Guys, i discovered myself this solution so that whenever idle ang connection nyo, you can browse the internet.

Bookmark nyo to:

http://web.portal.globe.com.ph.kproxy.com/servlet/redirect.srv/sruj/snvrabu/smno/p1/

Pag idle na connection nyo, just open it in your bookmarked list. It’s Google, I proxied with kproxy.com. I figured out that web.portal.globe.com.ph is the only site that downloads when the connection is idle.

It works very well with me. Tell me if that link works with you too.

P.S.
I hope somebody could figure out how can we use that with Yahoo Messenger.

Cons I observed:
-Can’t watch long youtube videos, videos cut/stop prematurely.
-French/Russian language appears.
-Proxy is slow at times.

Reply

Rex Reply:

How exactly do you use this? I get an “invalid session” message.

Reply

KEN DLA 2RE Reply:

Oh sorry Rex. Use this one:

http://web.portal.globe.com.ph.kproxy.com/

Put the site’s URL on the field then click “Surf!”. Use this only when you’re connection is idle.

Reply

Rex Reply:

Thanks! It works! Cool!

Is there any proxy sites that offers faster connection than that one???

iggor:

Hi

I’m From Cainta Rizal. My line of work requires an Internet connection 24/7.
I’ve got Smart Bro (Prepaid), Globe Visibility(Postpaid) and a new Sun Broadband.

For Globe Wireless Prepaid, I’ve got the old one, model E220. It is very slow among the 3. Barely reaching 2kbps on peak hours.

Smart Broadband Prepaid. Almost same speed and performance. But I could connect to a remote company network which I could not achieve in the Globe Visb.

Frustrated, so I get a new Sun Broadband Internet (postpaid), and so far it leaves the first 2 far behind. Both speed and reliability. The only downside for this is it’s limited coverage. It is not “nationwide”.

In the coming days, I’ll be dropping the Globe Visib postpaid and have both Sun and Smart. Smart Bro being my backup.

Wireless broadband was NEVER and will NEVER (for a long time) be suggested to be your main source of internet connection. DSL or Cable internet connection in the house is 100% better, in every angle! Just use a wireless router! These wireless broadband kits are designed to be your internet connection source when you travel outside the house. Pero kung talagang cheap kayo or medyo constrained ang budget, then this post is not for you.

Based on my observation, overall mas malawak ang signal ng Smart pero mostly GPRS lang. Mas malawak talaga ang HSDPA coverage ng Globe compared to Smart.. at least here in Panay Island.

Bought a G-tattoo this month. Was not able to connect to the internet. Error 619 or something. CS escalated issue to technical team but I never heard of them again. End up having a little confrontation with the staff at globe biz center. They said they needed to activate the sim on my unit before I could get it to connect. WHATTTT!!! That’s like buying a flashlight that does not light.

Well, I waited for over 2 days and I finally got it to go online. Based on my conversation with the staff at globe, I think some of the units for the tattoo needed SIM activation. I just don’t know why they cant activate it before someone comes in the buy the product. It’s like a hit or miss situation. That’s the way I see it.

@ahjy, we have same predicament right now.

Tattoo absolutely sucks here in Mindanao. They are stealing the money of every person using it. I have tried to connect in CDO, Zamboanga City, and Zamboanga del Norte. In CDO I could at least surf but the connection was super slow. In the other areas, which claimed HDSPA connection, I could connect but could not surf at all! Yet they kept taking my money. I have thrown the USB away already because it is useless for me. I have a smartbro USB now which seems to work better. Just because of this, I believe GLOBE is stealing money from people for marketing and selling Tattoo in areas where they cannot service adequately. In my opinion, Globe is now being run by incompetency.
