The Missions Choir

Wednesday Oct 29, 2008

One by One

After two months of practice, we finally went onstage to challenge the congregation. It was the Missions Musicale and we were the Missions Choir.

It was last August when we started our practices. Althea was invited me to join the choir and while I was in the process of explaining “I don’t sing” and “I’m not sure if I have the time,” she has already introduced me to ten choir members including the conductor. Before I knew it, I was standing right beside the grand piano learning the notes of Go Forth and Tell! With that song, I knew I had to attend the next practice. Read the rest of this entry »

It’s Mission Month!

Monday Oct 20, 2008

October is Mission Month and my singing career is alive once again! Haha!

Since I think I’m not ready to be a missionary yet and personally reach out to all the needy souls outside of my own country, I’ve agreed to join the Missions Musicale. With that, I am inviting anyone who reads this to attend the evening service at Doane Baptist Church on October 26, 2008 at 5:30 PM.

This isn’t the first time I’m singing in a choir. Ive sang in the same church — about 10 years ago! I never thought I’d ever sing again, but when I was presented with the first song they (we!) were going to learn, I felt like I had to do what I thought I couldn’t do. Here’s a teaser – Go Forth and Tell!

Thank you Althea for invitation and for your powerful convincing powers (I’m sure someone was behind her).

Let’s send out the good news of our Lord Jesus Christ! See you there!

There is no SUMMER in the Philippines!

Friday Oct 10, 2008

There is no such thing as “summer” in the Philippines. There is only the dry and the wet season. Summer is a term used in temperate countries where they have four seasons – spring, summer, autumn, and winter.

However, the terms summer break, summer vacation, summer job, etc. are deeply ingrained in our subconscious that I find it a hassle to substitute them with technically correct terms each time. I am therefore making this blog post so I can just link to it everytime I loosely use the term “summer”. For the record: technically, there is no summer in the Philippines.

The Philippine dry season lasts roughly from December to May and the wet season for the rest of the year. I’m not sure though if this still holds true given the recent climatic anomalies. Rain and sun seem to be all mixed up now.

A sack of shredded money

Sunday Sep 28, 2008

I hate money so much I decided to withdraw all my bank savings in 500 peso bills and shred them to pieces. Before burning them, I decided to take a souvenir photo.

It’s been a little more than a week since I’ve bought my Asus EEE PC 1000H. Before the new-laptop smell totally fades away, I’m going to give my first 7-day impressions of this notebook. Allow me to focus on the problems because there are lots of pros out there already. Here they are in descending Read the rest of this entry »

My photo spotted at Iloilo Airport

Sunday Sep 21, 2008

I was on my way to Cebu for a school field trip last week. As usual, I was taking photos of the little details of  the beautiful Iloilo Airport. I was taking pictures of the LCD screens while waiting in line at the check-in counters when, again, I noticed something eerily familiar.

The display of an LCD TV at the Iloilo Airport with the 'suspect' photo at the lower right corner

To my utter disbelief , one of the rotating photos on the LCD display looked just like one of my airport photos I posted on the internet! I briefly mentioned it to a classmate, Noel, who was with me but  I soon brushed aside the thought that someone again used my photo off the internet without permission. The airport should be able to take photos of their own building! Perhaps the angle was just similar?

It’s Asus EEE PC 1000H for me

Monday Sep 15, 2008

To end weeks of turmoil between my alter egos, I finally decided to give in to one of them and buy the Asus EEE PC 1000H. I got it last Saturday after an intense last-minute debate between two groups of my personalities.

ASUS EEE PC 1000H or MSI Wind or Lenovo Ideapad S10?

I was choosing between these three models, all of which sport a 10-inch screen. I’ve decided not to bother with Read the rest of this entry »

UPV Miagao from Google Earth

Sunday Sep 7, 2008

The Miagao Campus of the University of the Phillipines Visayas is finally covered by high reolution imagery in Google Earth! I’ve been hoping for this moment for years! Luckily, there are no clouds at all and the colors are excellent. The satellite image was taken July 16, 2002 so if you were out there on the field on that day, check out these pictures closely!

Let’s take a closer look at the different buildings of my university campus.

How to watermark photos in Picasa 3

Thursday Sep 4, 2008

Among the useful features of Picasa 3 is the ability to add watermarks to your photos. There are two ways of doing this. Automatically and manually.

Watermark photos automatically

This method is easier but has some limitations. You can set Picasa to automatically watermark photos with a line of text every time you export them to your own computer or upload them to Picasa Web Albums.
