They said it was still dangerous to the eyes to use film negatives so I made a pinhole and projected the image of the eclipse to a piece of paper. The eclipse is only 30+% here in Iloilo City and lasted around 8 to 11 am today.

Whew, it’s been a long time since I last posted here. Before this month ends, I should at least make one post for May.
This Sunday May 31, we, the DBC Chancel Choir, will be having a repeat performance of our Easter musical which we performed last April 12. Some told me they didn’t know about last month’s presentation, so now will be a good time to watch for those who missed it.
The musical is entitled AD: A Muscial for Easter and Beyond (created by Deborah Craig-Claar and Robert Sterling) We will be singing all the 8 songs/medleys PLUS 3 more since this repeat is for the church anniversary. If you want a preview, below is an excerpt from last April. The first time I heard the recording, I was surprised we sounded like, well, a real choir. Haha!
Hossana! with O Sacred Heart and Let it Rain!

Last April's Invitation
We are now busy rehearsing since it’s only 4 days away. I myself am struggling reaching the really high notes in the new songs. This is my first time to encounter G4s! Last time I thought F4 was already way above my vocal range. Surprisingly, I managed to do it quite well during the actual performance.

Wow!
Well, this is all by God’s grace. I never even thought I could sing. How much more sing as a tenor? I think my participation in this concert is a subtle miracle in itself.
Okay, so mark it! May 31, 2009, 5PM, at the Doane Baptist Church Hall. Here is a map in case you have no idea where that is.
Again, this invitation is also extended to non-Christians and even aetheists. You can come just for the entertainnment. It’s free admission anyway. See you there!

Another case of photos being ripped off the internet. I’m posting it here because the photo involved is mine. The culprit? Most likely someone from the Iloilo Provincial Capitol.
I and some online friends ventured into the Iloilo Capitol one day to take pictures of the sleek building and the panoramic views from its balconies. I’ve done it before so the views were already familiar to me. However, one familiar sight bothered me. It was the sight of the Iloilo Governor’s poster on the lobby wall.

Governor Neil Tupas' poster in the Capitol
There was that state of déjà vu. I felt like I have seen the image in the background before. I felt that it was mine. But I wasn’t sure since it’s been about two years since I took a photo like that. Somebody else could have just taken a similar angle, who knows? Read the rest of this entry »

I won’t be going out this Sunday to take photos of Dinagyang. Perhaps I will never do so again.
For the past years, I always looked forward to the days of the Dinagyang festival. During the tribe performances, I would run along with my humble point-and-shoot camera, squeezing my way into the crowd to take photos of the Dinagyang warriors. I took hundreds of photographs. Finding good angles and getting the right timing was difficult, but every detail and gesture seemed worthy to capture. I posted my photos in the internet and they made their way in several websites. It was my way of promoting Dinagyang. The premier festival of my city and one of the best in the country.

I was proud of it because the thundering performances were indeed a spectacle. I promoted it because I know it brings significant income and prestige to my city.
That was then. This year, and in the succeeding years, it will be different for me. Read the rest of this entry »

I just so love Google Map Maker! This cool web application is some sort of Wiki Map that allows internet users to define administrative areas, natural features, buildings, roads, and business listings on top of satellite imagery in select countries. To ensure accurate and up-to-date data, users moderate each others edits before they get published. Google says the data generated from Map Maker might eventually make their way into the already popular Google Maps.
Map data over at Google Maps is still very coarse in most countries. With Map Maker internet users are empowered to easily create detailed maps of their communities. All you need is a high-res satellite image and good memory. No need for GPS.

I needed to trace the edges of Taal Volcano since, surprisingly, it doesn't show up on the map layer

I was on my way to Cebu for a school field trip last week. As usual, I was taking photos of the little details of the beautiful Iloilo Airport. I was taking pictures of the LCD screens while waiting in line at the check-in counters when, again, I noticed something eerily familiar.

The display of an LCD TV at the Iloilo Airport with the 'suspect' photo at the lower right corner
To my utter disbelief , one of the rotating photos on the LCD display looked just like one of my airport photos I posted on the internet! I briefly mentioned it to a classmate, Noel, who was with me but I soon brushed aside the thought that someone again used my photo off the internet without permission. The airport should be able to take photos of their own building! Perhaps the angle was just similar?

How would you feel if, while entering the largest mall in your city, you see posters at the main entrance bearing a particularly familiar photograph? It isn’t the main element of the poster, but seeing the little photo immediately brings flashes of memory that in a split-second lead you to realize – THAT PHOTO IS MINE!!!
I decided to go to SM City Iloilo this afternoon to try to buy some stuff. As I approached the entrance, a large poster caught my attention. Its title “1st Indigenous Fashion Market Week” made me feel glad of the continuing efforts to promote the local weaving industry. Then I spotted something eerily familiar.

Someone ripped off my photo!
